World Bee Day – 20th of May 2024

World Bee Day is all about spreading the message on how important our bees and other pollinators are, encouraging everyone to take action to protect and conserve them, and showing off just how important they are for keeping ecosystems and agriculture going.

Bees are not just buzzing insects; they are essential pollinators that play a crucial role in our food systems and ecosystem health. Did you know that one out of every three bites of food we eat is thanks to bee pollination? From fruits and vegetables to nuts and seeds, bees are responsible for pollinating a vast array of crops that sustain us.

Fun Facts about Bees!
  1. Bees are so noisy because their wings beat around
    11,400 times in one minute!
  2. Honeybees communicate through a series of dance
    moves called the waggle dance!
  3. The honeybee is the only insect that makes food
    that man can eat!
  4. The average worker bee lives for just five to
six weeks. During this time, she’ll produce around a twelfth of a teaspoon of
    honey!
  5. The queen can live up to five years. She is
busiest in the summer months, when she can lay up to 2,500 eggs a day!

Bees play a crucial role in our ecosystem. They pollinate food crops, benefiting the UK’s arable crops. Bees also help feed livestock by pollinating many crops used for animal feed, making it easier to produce meat, eggs, and dairy. Additionally, bees support the ecosystem by pollinating wild trees and flowers, which in turn supports other insects, birds, bats, mammals, and the entire food chain. Without bees and other pollinators, the ecosystem would collapse.

Threats Facing Bees: Despite their importance, bees face numerous threats that put their populations at risk. Pesticides, habitat loss, climate change, and diseases all contribute to declining bee numbers worldwide. Without bees, our ecosystems would suffer, and our food supply would be severely impacted.

How You Can Help:

The good news is that everyone can play a part in bee conservation. Here are some simple yet effective ways to support our buzzy friends:

  • Plant bee-friendly flowers and herbs in your garden or balcony such as fox gloves, birds-foot trefoil and red clovers.
  • Avoid using pesticides (this makes a difference to other wildlife, not just bees!) and opt for natural pest control methods.
  • Support local beekeepers by buying their honey and beeswax products.
  • Educate others about the importance of bees and the threats they face.
  • Operation Revive a Bee

As we celebrate World Bee Day, let’s remember the invaluable contributions of bees to our world. By working together to protect and support these vital pollinators, we can ensure a brighter future for both bees and humanity. Join the buzz and make a difference for bees today!
