Adult Care Worker Standards

All our programmes are accredited for Edexcel Awarding Body and meet the National Standards for the Social Care Sector as defined by Skills for Care Sector Skills Council.

DHCT is the provider of choice for many social care employers in Cornwall supporting recruitment and training for care workers who may work in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres or some clinical healthcare settings.

Assistant Practitioner in Health and Social Care Level 5

Who’s it for?

This course is for experienced Health and Social Care workers who want to develop their skills and knowledge in Clinical Healthcare to support patients and services users.

Components:

• Level 5 Diploma for Assistant Practitioners in Healthcare CACHE accredited

There are 20 modules including:

  • Principles and philosophy for healthcare
  • Partnership working in healthcare
  • Team leadership and management in healthcare
  • Person-centred practice for positive outcomes
  • Specialist areas of healthcare
  • Risk-taking and risk management in healthcare
  • Human development and healthcare needs through the lifespan
  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Provision and support for nutrition and hydration
  • Monitor health and well-being through physiological measurements
  • Professional development in healthcare
  • Continuous improvement in healthcare
  • Research in healthcare
  • Clinical activities and interventions (dependent on role)
    • assessment and monitoring of health
    • physiological measurements
    • management and administration of medication via different routes
    • tissue viability and pressure-area care
    • doppler and compression bandaging
    • continence management, catheter and stoma care
    • wound care
    • extended feeding techniques
    • promotion of health and well-being
    • early identification and recognition
    • management of chronic diseases (eg cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, epilepsy, stroke and dementia)
    • acute illness and emergency response
    • support at the end of life
    • physical disabilities

• Minimum of Level 2 English
• Minimum of Level 2 Maths
• Care Framework Certificate

Delivery Model:

Blended delivery including; one to one support with an occupationally competent tutor, and virtual learning environment.  

-20 Modules
– 1-1 Support by DHCT nurse tutor to complete modules.
– Virtual Classroom (via Microsoft Teams)
– Practical Clinical skills training undertaken by Cornwall Foundation NHS trust (CFT)
– Competence checks to confirm clinical skills capability with Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust (RCHT) and DHCT nurse practitioners.
– Clinical skills undertaken depend on the needs of the service.
– Employer must ensure patients/clients with Clinical needs are available for the learner to support in order to demonstrate competence. 

End Point Assessment (EPA)

Observation in practice
A knowledge test
Professional Discussion
Reflective journal

The learner must complete the EPA to achieve the full programme.

Duration – 18-20 months

Adult Care Worker Level 2

This course is for frontline care staff for vulnerable adults to within their own homes, day care centres, residential and nursing homes and other healthcare settings.

In order to meet this standard learners will be required to achieve a:

Duration: 12 months to complete

Cost: Employer Contribution is £300, please view our funding page for further information

Grant: if the learner is aged 16-18 the employer will receive a grant of £1000.

Learners must undertake an End Point Assessment prior to successful completion of their standard. This will include:

  • Self Assessment of confidence for role
  • Professional Discussion
  • A Judgement Test to confirm knowledge
  • Present portfolio

Delivery: Blended learning through one to one support with an occupationally competent tutor/assessor in the workplace and our virtual learning environment.

Lead Adult Care Worker Level 3

Senior Care Workers, care assistants or personal assistants working in residential, domiciliary care, supported living and independent employers with a direct payment.

In order to meet this standard learners will be required to achieve a:

Duration: 13 months to complete

 Lead Practitioners in Adult Care may work in residential or nursing homes, domiciliary care, day centres, a person’s own home or some clinical healthcare settings.  

Components:

BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Adult Care
• Mandatory Units equal 33 credits:
o Advanced Communication Skills in Adult Care
o Personal and Professional Development in Care Settings
o Equality and Diversity in Care Settings
o Understand Safeguarding and Protection in Care Settings
o Person-centred Assessment and Planning to Improve Individual Outcomes
o Understanding Personalisation in Care and Support Services
o Health and Safety in Care Settings
o Professional Practice in Adult Care
o Develop, Maintain and Use Records and Reports
o Partnership Working in Care Settings
o Safeguard Children and Young People Who Are Present in Care Settings

• Optional units to equal 27 credits. You will choose these with your tutor and employer based on your job role.

• Minimum of Level 2 English
• Minimum of Level 2 Maths
• Care Framework Certificate Standards mapped across the BTEC.

Duration: 15 months

End Point Assessment (EPA)

EPA is completed by an External Pearson Awarding Body Assessor. Learner completes:

This qualification is for a registered manager of a service, unit, deputy or assistant manager. They will be responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance of the care given and the values and training of staff with established standards and regulations.
